Saturday 9th December – walk **** Levington Creek to Nacton Shores – Sunny periods but cold.

Today was looking the best day of the weekend with rain maybe even snow tomorrow and being a sunny, frosty morning, we thought we would head to Levington Creek to see if it had frozen. So, after breakfast I packed a picnic and we headed off then just past the marina road Mag spotted over 30 deer in the field including one of the white ones:) I quickly stopped to take some pics as they looked impressive with the River Orwell as a backdrop. The herd quickly saw us and were a bit spooked, then watched by the two large males with full antlers they moved off! We parked at the small creek car park and headed down to the creek just as a few clouds appeared over the sun. As earlier this year with the tide low there was lots of ice over the mud making it very beautiful with many waders, ducks and egrets looking for a meal. Then near the sluice to the right of the creek a kingfisher sped off when we disturbed his fish hunting! We made it to the River Orwell and it was much cooler here with the cold West wind blowing straight down the river. The river looked very empty with next to no moored boats now and only one yacht sailing. We took the high path up into the woods and saw yet more deer by the big tree in the field which was also full of Lapwings. It is two miles to the Nacton Shore road and we only saw a bait digger and a few walkers. It was to early and cold for a picnic at our seat by Nacton Shore so continued back diagonally across the bridle way to the Nacton/Levington road. We spotted a few squirrels looking for nuts they had buried earlier in the year! We then walked back along the lane which is very up and down to the lovely Levington Church where we sat on Julie Schwer’s Mum’s memorial bench for our picnic which has the most amazing views down to the river:) After a top cheese and pickle sandwich and mince pie we completed the walk back to the van, being out 2 hours and covering 3.50 miles. Perhaps if we are lucky we might get a snowy walk tomorrow???
